Worship: “The Guest House” Rev. Jake Morrill

"The 13th century Muslim poet, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, writes, ""This being human is a guest house.  Every morning, a new arrival.""  The human condition, he proposes, is deep enough to welcome all manner of human experience.  More literally, our ORUUC church building is a guest house for all manner of human experience.  As a congregation, we're stewards of this gift.  Stewardship is not only an operational question; it's a spiritual one.  In this month of exploring the theme ""giving and receiving,"" we look toward a congregational vote on the question of providing sanctuary for those facing deportation.  If the congregation voted ""yes,"" there would be serious consequences.  If the congregation voted ""no,"" there would be serious consequences.  There are options other than ""all in"" or ""all out.""  It's a complex question, worthy of considered decision.  So, this morning, we'll reflect on our mission, our building, and the question before us.
