The Art Gallery at ORUUC

The Art Gallery at ORUUC will present an exhibit of paintings by James F. Norris, opening Saturday, April 14, at 3:00 p.m. with a reception and gallery talk.

James Norris was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota.  His father, a large animal veterinarian and rancher, introduced Jim to the beauty of the prairie and the Badlands, along with the horses and livestock typical of that lifestyle. His mother's interest in painting was also instrumental to his development. Two pieces by Jim's mother, Betty, Lone Tree and Portrait of a Woman, will be shown in this exhibit:.

Jim received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from South Dakota State University. He continued his studies at the Colorado Institute of Art and Platt College.

Subject matter for most of Jim's art comes from traveling the hills and prairies of the American West. Photographs or sketches of compelling subjects are transformed into watercolor, oil paintings, and acrylics at his home studio.

Since moving to Oak Ridge in 2016, Jim has been inspired by the rural scenery of the Southeast. He is particularly fond of depicting the character of older barns found in the area, some of which will be on display.

The exhibit will run through mid-June, and is open to the public 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sundays.
